Organized and Attractive Work Spaces Increase Productivity

One of the places we spend most of our time is in our office or work space.    It makes sense to create an organized and professional space for yourself, employees and your clients.   When you work in a more organized space you waste less time looking for information and more time focussed on the job at hand.    Many studies support the increase in productivity based on the work environment and that can include all of the follow factors: Lighting, temperature, colours, access to nature or natural sunlight, noise, comfort including ergonomic s, air quality and work space.

Studies show that there is an increase in productivity when you have plants in your work environment. They improve the environment by releasing oxygen, improving air quality and reducing stress.    Start small by bringing in one plant at a time. If you’re not used to having plants get a hardy plant like the spider plants or cactus.

Colours are thought to have an impact on mood and overall atmosphere.   Colour can affect people at a more subliminal level. It may be subjective, but the following is an overview of the effects of colour:

  • Brighter colors (reds, as well as blues and greens) are associated with higher focus and task accuracy
  • Blue is calming and cooling, promoting mental control and clear, creative thinking.
  • Pink lessens feelings of irritation, aggression, loneliness, discouragement and burden.   Red enhances feelings of strength and energy; it is associated with vitality and ambition. Yellow makes people feel clear-headed and alert, allowing for clear thinking for decision making.
  • Orange helps ease emotions and boost self-esteem. It creates enthusiasm for life.

Hire a student or locate a volunteer to help with making some changes to your office and budget for the changes.   If organization is your weak point, there are people that can get you moving in the right direction with a weekend clean up and file system.    Pay now or pay later with your employees’ productivity or your own.   Having a well-designed work space can be a powerful tool to increasing productivity and overall work satisfaction.
